Every person who signs in to Buttons needs their own user account, so access and activity can be tied to them individually rather than shared. This guide covers creating a user, getting them their first password, and the special case of the System Administrator account.
Before you begin#
- Access to Settings → Users (requires a Pro or Enterprise license; local user management isn't available on the free tier).
- At least one Role already created, or a plan to assign one after, see Create roles and assign permissions.
Create a user#
- Open Settings → Users and select Create User.
- Enter the person's Full Name: Buttons suggests a username from this automatically.
- Adjust the Username if needed.
- Optionally enter an Email.
- Select one or more Roles to assign.
- Save.
No password is set at this point: a new user has no way to sign in to the web editor until they complete setup. Panel and surface access (PIN, NFC) works as soon as a role is assigned, independent of this.
Get the new user signed in#
Creating a user immediately shows a Web Editor Setup Required card on their detail view, with a one-time Setup Link already generated and valid for 72 hours. Send it to the person through whatever channel you'd normally use to share a link with them: Buttons doesn't email it for you. If it expires or you need a new one, select Regenerate on that same card.
Once the setup link is used, consumed, or expires without being regenerated, that card is replaced by a button in the top-right corner of the user's detail view, labeled Generate Setup Code before their first login, or Reset Password afterward. This produces a fresh link valid for 24 hours.
The person opens the link and sets their own password there. Password requirements: at least 8 characters, including a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a number, and a special character.
The System Administrator account#
The System Administrator account can't be deleted: Buttons blocks the attempt outright. If its password is lost, it's reset from the watchdog application on the machine running Buttons (Reset Admin Password), not from inside the web interface. If more than one System Administrator account exists, the watchdog's reset tool lets you choose which one to reset; with only one, it resets that account directly.
If you get stuck#
What you see | What to try |
|---|
A new user has no way to log in. | Send them the Setup Link already shown on their detail view (or select Regenerate/Generate Setup Code for a new one): an account has no password until they set one themselves. |
The setup link no longer works. | The initial setup link and any regenerated from its card are valid for 72 hours; a fresh one generated from the Generate Setup Code/Reset Password button (once no link is active) is valid for 24 hours. Either way, links are one-time use: generate a new one. |
You can't delete an account. | If it's the System Administrator account, that's expected: it can't be deleted. Any other account should delete normally; check your own permissions if it doesn't. |
You're locked out of the System Administrator account entirely. | Use Reset Admin Password in the watchdog application on the host machine, not the web interface. |
The Users page isn't available at all. | Local user management requires a Pro or Enterprise license. |
