# Remove Buttons

> Uninstall Buttons on Windows, macOS or Linux, and decide whether to keep or delete your configuration and database.

Removing Buttons works differently on Windows, macOS and Linux. On every platform, your configuration and database live apart from the application files, so removing Buttons doesn't delete them unless you do that yourself. To move to a newer version instead, see Upgrade Buttons . Before you begin Quit Buttons normally before you remove it. If you might want your configuration again, export it first. See Export or import Buttons configuration . Remove Buttons on Windows Uninstall Buttons from Add or remove programs . The uninstaller removes the application files, the shortcuts, and the firewall rules the installer added. It doesn't remove your configuration or database. Warning The Windows uninstaller stops Buttons by force-terminating it, not by asking it to shut down. Quit Buttons yourself before you run the uninstaller. If some files are still in use, the uninstaller tells you a restart is needed to finish removing them. This is expected, not a failure. Remove Buttons on macOS There's no uninstaller on macOS. Quit Buttons. Remove Bitfocus Buttons from your Applications folder. To remove your configuration and database as well, delete the app's folder under Application Support in your user Library. Remove Buttons on Linux There's no uninstaller on Linux. If you set Buttons up as a systemd service, stop and disable it: sudo systemctl stop bitfocus-buttons sudo systemctl disable bitfocus-buttons Remove the unit file you copied to /etc/systemd/system/ , if any. Delete the directory you extracted Buttons into, such as /opt/bitfocus-buttons . Where your data lives Your database, configuration, modules and logs live in a separate location from the application files on every platform, which is why removing Buttons doesn't delete them. The exact location follows each operating system's conventions for application data. Look there, not in the folder Buttons is installed in, when you want to back up, inspect or delete it. If you get stuck What you see What to try Buttons was still running when you uninstalled it on Windows. Next time, quit it yourself first. The uninstaller force-terminates it rather than shutting it down cleanly. After uninstalling and reinstalling on Windows, your old configuration is still there. This is expected: the uninstaller never removes your data. Delete the data folder yourself if you want a clean start. You want to remove Buttons and its data on macOS. Delete the app from Applications, then delete its folder under Application Support in your user Library. You want a truly clean reinstall on Linux. Delete the old extracted directory and its data location yourself before you extract the new release.
