# Create and manage users

> Add a user account, send the one-time setup link so they can set a password, and recover the System Administrator account.

Every person who signs in to Buttons needs their own user account, so access and activity can be tied to them individually rather than shared. This guide covers creating a user, getting them their first password, and the special case of the System Administrator account. To manage your own account, open Settings → User Profile . To create and manage user accounts, open Auth → Users . Before you begin Access to Auth → Users (requires a Pro or Enterprise license; local user management isn't available on the free tier). At least one Role already created, or a plan to assign one after, see Create roles and assign permissions . Create a user Open Auth → Users . Select Create User . Enter the person's Full Name . Buttons automatically suggests a username based on this name. Change the Username if needed. Enter an Email if needed. This field is optional. Assign one or more Roles . Save the user. The person must use the setup link to set a password before they can sign in to the web editor. Panel and surface access through PIN or NFC does not require password setup. This access works as soon as a role is assigned. Get the new user signed in Find the Setup Link in the user's Web Editor Setup Required card. The link works once and expires after 72 hours. Send the Setup Link to the person. Buttons does not email it automatically. Ask them to open the link and set their password. The password must contain at least 8 characters, including a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a number, and a special character. Generate a new setup link If the Web Editor Setup Required card is still visible, select Regenerate to create a new link valid for 72 hours. After someone uses the link, or it expires without regeneration, a button replaces the card. Find this button in the top-right corner of the user's detail view: Before the person's first login, select Generate Setup Code . After their first login, select Reset Password . Either button creates a new one-time link valid for 24 hours. Send the new link to the person. The System Administrator account The System Administrator account can't be deleted: Buttons blocks the attempt outright. If its password is lost, it's reset from the watchdog application on the machine running Buttons ( Reset Admin Password ), not from inside the web interface. If more than one System Administrator account exists, the watchdog's reset tool lets you choose which one to reset; with only one, it resets that account directly. If you get stuck What you see What to try A new user has no way to log in. Send them the Setup Link already shown on their detail view (or select Regenerate / Generate Setup Code for a new one): an account has no password until they set one themselves. The setup link no longer works. The initial setup link and any regenerated from its card are valid for 72 hours; a fresh one generated from the Generate Setup Code / Reset Password button (once no link is active) is valid for 24 hours. Either way, links are one-time use: generate a new one. You can't delete an account. If it's the System Administrator account, that's expected: it can't be deleted. Any other account should delete normally; check your own permissions if it doesn't. You're locked out of the System Administrator account entirely. Use Reset Admin Password in the watchdog application on the host machine, not the web interface. The Users page isn't available at all. Local user management requires a Pro or Enterprise license.
